San Antonio's Merger Hotel provided a splendid location for the annual meeting focused on the topic of "postcoloniality". The meeting opened with a special session [...] at Trinity University. C.W. Spinks deserves appreciation and praise of efforts in bringing the SSA to San Antonio. The opening sessions featured a keynote address by Prof. Kenneth Pike, followed in the evening by a reception at the Merger Hotel.
Numerous panels pursued the postcolonial theme of the meeting, including fine sessions entitled "Citing Postcolonial Difference in Contemporary Film and Theater", "Uses and Abuses in Colonialism", "Reconceiving Pedagogy: Constellations, Organizations, and Webs", and "Colonialism and After". John Deely, Th.A. Sebeok Fellow of the SSA, organized a multi-session panel entitled "Semiotics in Mexico" which included presentations by numerous contemporary Mexican sign theorists. Roberta Kevelson assembled a panel on "Semiotics and Law" which also included historical papers touching upon the theme of postcoloniality. Additional panels developed topics in the areas of postmodern philosophy, history, literary criticism, music, visual and graphic art, poetry, film, Peircean semeiotic, cultural studies, critical theory, education, and linguistics.
Among the special sessions [...], Eugen Baer offered an inspiring plenary Presidential Lecture, "Ecce Homo: How Semiotics Becomes what IT IS". The C.S. Peirce Society presented a special plenary session, organized by Michael Shapiro, entitled "Evidence and Inquiry". The session considered the philosophical writings of Prof. Susan Haack, the featured speaker, in discussion with Robert Burch, T.L. Short, and Nathan Houser.
